Virginia Ely Townshend
Of Heathsville, VA, passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Virginia was born in Washington, DC on December 31, 1936 to Harry “Kirk” and Virginia Gaines Ely. After graduating from Gwynn Park High School, Virginia attended Strayer Secretary College and worked at the C.I.A. in Washington, DC. Virginia wed Woodrow W “Laddie” Townshend, Jr. and together they celebrated 61 years of marriage until he proceeded her in death in November, 2017. Virginia is survived by two sisters, Marilyn Meinhardt of Cottondale, FL and Sharon Dial [Mike] of Hughesville, MD, six sons, Woodrow Wilson III [Melanie] of Bowie, MD, Michael Andrew of Fredericksburg, VA, Daniel Bradley [Lisa] of Arlington, VA, Kenneth Scott [Janet] of Vienna, VA, Douglas Ely [Bethany] of New Bern, NC, and James Durwood [Christina] of Fredericksburg, VA. She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren [Beverly, Doug, Jr., Mary Catherine, Jeanne, Mark, Bradley, John, Maria, Autumn, Sam, and Jack] and 7 great-grandchildren [Jacob, Beth, Joey, Charlie, Caleb, Patrick, and Wendy], two cherished brothers-in-law [David & Samuel “Buzz”] and two cherished sisters-in-law [Catherine “Kitty” & Leah], many nieces, nephews and friends. Virginia was a member of the Light of Christ Anglican Church in Heathsville, VA and she was a Charter Member of the Brandywine Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary. She and Laddie enjoyed life on Cod Creek to the fullest, hosting family and friends each Fourth of July for magnificent firework displays for many years.
There will be a memorial service celebrating her life at 11 a.m., April 7, 2018 at Light of Christ Anglican Church in Heathsville, VA. Inurnment will be in Atonement Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD, in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Light of Christ Church www.lightofchristva.org
