Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and much love that we announce the passing of Judith “Judy” Marie Mason on August 9, 2020 at the age of 71 after fighting a courageous battle with kidney disease. Judy passed away peacefully at Capital Caring Hospice Center in Aldie, Virginia with her daughter and granddaughter at her side.

Judy was born at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC on July 26, 1949 to the late Eugene and Minnie Mason. Judy was raised in the Cherrydale area of Arlington, VA and continued to reside in Arlington for most of her life. She is predeceased by her ex-husband of 25 years, William Legg, in which during that time they raised two beautiful daughters. Her brother, Russell Mason, also predeceases her.

After high school, Judy took on a civilian position with the United States Marine Corps as a uniform specialist where she worked for 25 years before taking early retirement. While she loved her career, she longed to feel like she was making more of a difference in the world. With a compassionate heart and a love of helping others, she enrolled in college at George Mason University where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She utilized her degree as a group home counselor working with mentally and intellectually disabled women helping them to become more independent in society. She was a strong advocate for mental health programs.

Judy was a devoted, loving mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and grandchildren and embraced every moment with them. In her spare time, she was an avid reader of mystery, historical and romance novels, loved puzzles and her computer games, mainly Sims 4. She enjoyed tracing her family roots through genealogy and enjoyed musicals. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas in which she would adorn the house with classic white lights, Christmas trees with every ornament being unique and in its right place, singing Christmas carols and attending candlelight Christmas church services. She would often drive around adoring the neighborhood decorations and would make a game of finding the most elaborately decorated house.

Judy was a very spiritual woman and loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a highly active member in the Baptist church for many years having sung in the choir, played the organ and piano for church programs and the hand bells for special holiday events, and being a part of the youth music program. In her later years, she finally found her home as a member of Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ in Arlington, Virginia with their mission statement of “Let all we do be done in love.”

Judy was a wonderful loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend. She filled each of our hearts in an incredibly special way, providing the family a warm sanctuary for all of us. Through all our family life's changes, celebrations, storms, births, deaths, and day-to-day happenings her prayers covered us, and we knew she was always there for us with that genuine, abiding love. She was truly a blessing in all our lives.

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Shannon Bowen (Charles) of Fairfax, Virginia, and Jeanine Zuk of Springfield, Virginia; four grandchildren, Alysha and Alayna Bowen and Caleb and Chloe Zuk; siblings Donna Persinger (Jack), David Mason, Linda Overcash, Carol Mason and Cathy Pettis (Fred).

A closed memorial service to celebrate her life will be at Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ in Arlington, Virginia on September 12, 2020 at 11:00AM. Service is closed for family only. We ask that family please reach out to jeanine.zuk@verizon.net to confirm their attendance as there is a limited number of attendees allowed due to the current pandemic.
