David Theodore Chester, age 71, a resident of Alexandria, Virginia passed away on December 3, 2018 at Fairfax Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Fairfax, Virginia after a long illness.
David was born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and was raised in Austin, Texas. His parents, Marjorie Stenberg Chester and Arthur Malbridge Chester Sr, are deceased. He is survived by a brother Arthur, first cousins Julie Kersey and Richard Bellman, and by many members of the Stenberg, Chester and Chesler families.
David graduated from the University of Texas with Bachelor of Journalism and Master of Interdisciplinary Studies degrees, then served in the U.S. Army in Korea. David had a long career as a journalist. He was news anchor and reporter for KTBC-TV and other stations in Texas; station manager and public information officer for the U.S. Army in Fort Polk, Louisiana; news correspondent and anchor with Mutual Radio Network; and reported the evening news on National Public Radio in Washington, DC. He authored and edited more than thirty books, eight national newsletters and edited for three regional newspapers. He received eleven media awards, including being elected Fellow of the Washington Journalism Center and of the Radio Television News Directors Foundation. He taught journalism at four colleges and universities.
David was a dedicated lover of animals from an early age. He co-managed an animal rescue center while living in West Louisiana. He also cared for abandoned or injured pets for many years while living in Virginia.
