Daniel John Obester, age 76, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2018 at the caring community of Iliff Nursing and Rehab in Dunn Loring Virginia. From his birth in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on February 3, 1942, to his death, he lived a life of caring and faith, supporting all those around him - family, friends, and colleagues. Following his own father’s early death, he took on the man of the house responsibilities, and worked early and hard to support his family, especially when they moved to Newark, New Jersey. He graduated with high honors from high school and studied engineering for a while at Fairleigh Dickinson University, all while working to provide earnings for his family. He worked initially for Troy Art Supplies and then for over 40 years at Johnston Letter Co., Inc., and was much more than a manager of the company. He took employees under his wing, helping with housing issues, health issues, and treating them to one of his great passions, cooking wonderful food. He continued this love of cooking and serving throughout his life and was known to host everything from monthly picnics to wonderful holiday celebrations for family and friends. Through one of those dear friends he was introduced to the love of his life, Virginia, and together they celebrated their 50th Anniversary this past August. Dan continued in service to others, through his roles on the Sales Executive Club, as Eucharistic Minister and CCD teacher at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, and as a mentor and sponsor to many in the community. In 2005, Dan and Ginny moved to Greenbelt, Maryland to be close to their daughter and have lived in the Washington, DC area ever since. In recent years he has especially enjoyed time playing and talking with his granddaughter and visiting with family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia, children Daniel (Dee) and Elizabeth, granddaughter Vivienne, and sister Phyllis. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00am on December 12, 2018, at St. Michael Church, 7401 St. Michaels Lane, Annandale, VA 22003. The family will be at home following the mass to reminisce, grieve, support each other, and chat. In lieu of flowers, memorials in the form of cash, flowers, or food may be made specifically to the Nursing Team at Iliff Nursing and Rehab to continue Dan’s legacy of caring. They are located at 8000 Iliff Dr, Dunn Loring, VA 22027.
