On Wednesday, June 26, 2019, Carol Ann Jensen passed away at the age of 62 after a struggle with endometrial cancer. Carol was surrounded by family and friends at her apartment home in Fairfax, Virginia at the time of her passing.
Carol Ann Mercer was born on August 21, 1956 to William and Muriel Mercer. She grew up on lake-front property and enjoyed spending time swimming and boating as a child.
Carol graduated Lake Superior State College in Sault Ste. Marie, MI with an Associate’s degree in Nursing in 1976 and worked as registered nurse in Michigan, Arizona, and North Dakota prior to her children being born. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in 1985 from Minot State University in Minot, ND.
Carol married Kurt Jensen on September 25, 1976 in Waterford, Michigan. The Jensens previously resided in Centreville, VA from 1996-2018. Prior residences included Colorado Springs, CO; Clearfield, UT; Minot, ND; Rantoul, IL; Tucson, AZ; Detroit, MI; and Kinross, MI.
Carol was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax from July 1996 until her passing and was on the congregation’s staff from 1997 to 2017, first as a Sunday school assistant, and then as the membership coordinator. She was grateful to have the opportunity to welcome so many new faces to the congregation over the years.
Carol, along with Kurt, found a community within the Virginia wine world as they published the on-line blog Wine About Virginia. She and Kurt spent many weekends travelling to different Virginia wineries where she made some very close friends over the years.
Carol had a love for dogs, owning several over her lifetime. She volunteered at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter after her retirement.
Carol is survived by her husband of 42 years, Kurt, and their daughters, Laura Brown (Shawn) of Fredericksburg, VA, Diana Robbins (Karl) of Woodbridge, VA, and her beloved granddaughter, Amelia Brown. She is also survived by her mother Muriel Mercer, and her brothers Mark Mercer and Craig Mercer, all residents of Michigan. She was predeceased by her father, William Mercer, and her sister, Dawn Salo.
