REGIS HOWARD BARBER
August 17, 1941 - July 7, 2017
Regis Howard Barber, age 75, passed away peacefully on Friday July 7th, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on August 17, 1941 to Howard Gaither and Mary Ethel (McGrath) Barber and was the eldest of 7 children.
A respectful and loving man, Regis devoted his life to serving the community with disabilities and vision impairment. He retired from South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind after serving as President/CEO for over 15 years. In turn, Regis was well respected and loved by all, and always enjoyed a good laugh with friends and family over a glass of wine or scotch.
Throughout his life he kept alive his friendship with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and his classmates from seminary days. His decision to go to Japan as a seminarian created a lifelong love and respect for Japan and its culture, which was forever a part of his life and integral to his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Yukiyo Sakai, daughter Naomi (Mark), son Brent (Eve); four grandchildren: Olivia, Derek, Ryan and Julia; siblings: Cheryl, Aurelia, Michael "Shar," Joellyn, Rowan and Amy, along with their families.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated by longtime oblate friend, Father Billy Morell OMI, on Saturday, August 12th at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in the crypt chapel of Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate at 400 Michigan Avenue NE, Washington DC.
The family extends a special thanks to Father Billy Morell OMI, Father Dave Ullrich OMI, Vitas Hospice and the wonderful team of caregivers. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made to the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (www.oblatesusa.org) or South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind (www.stlb.net)
