Nancy Woodhead, MSN CPNP, 67, of Arlington, Virginia passed from this life August 15, 2017 at home following a six month battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her husband Gregory, her sister Carol and her twin Jane.
Nancy was born into a loving Franco-American family in Lewiston, Maine, daughter of Arthur and Bernice Belliveau.
Nancy received her B.S. in Nursing from the University of Maine and first practiced nursing in ICUs and burn units of hospitals in Lewiston. She received her MS in nursing from the University of Maine and practiced nursing in the ER of York Hospital in Maine. In 1991, she moved to Arlington with her husband and practiced nursing in the ICU of Georgetown University Hospital. She completed her Pediatric Nurse Practitioner training at Catholic University, 1996.
Nancy was employed by the Baltimore City Health Department in school based clinics in West Baltimore, MD for more than 20 years. She served in various leadership roles in AFSCME Local 558, including a term as local union president. She helped to train nurse practitioners as an adjunct faculty member of Johns Hopkins University. She also published a medical journal article on “adolescent risk taking” by junior high students.
Nancy was an extremely competent and dedicated hands-on professional who made a difference in the lives of the children of Baltimore. For “Miss Nancy,” her students always came first.
Nancy’s personal life revolved around her extended family and many close friends. She was a gentle soul and people enjoyed being with her. If you knew Nancy, you loved her. She had a beautiful smile that people remember and that Gregory enjoyed every day. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their beach house in Lewes, Delaware. Reading, especially politics, cooking, long walks and boating in Lewes were her favorite activities.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 40 years, Gregory Woodhead, her sisters Carol Beals of Boca Raton, FL and Jane Williams of Florence, KY, step-daughter Grace Madden of Chicago IL, brothers-in law Mark Woodhead, John Woodhead, Scott Robinson and Edward Jawor, sisters-in-law Valerie Robertson, Jane Jawor, Joline Woodhead and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by her brother-in law Stephen Woodhead.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic church, Arlington, VA (all beliefs welcome), Saturday, August 26, 11 AM, followed by a luncheon at St Charles, Benedict Hall, 12 - 2 PM. There will also be a celebration of Nancy’s life at the Williamsburg Condo in Arlington starting at 6 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, or to Health Care for the Homeless:
